Under pressure Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has the target
of claiming top spot for Real Madrid in their Champions League group, after
seeing a performance ‘with more balance’ on Wednesday.
Los Blancos defeated Copenhagen 4-0 in the second round
of group stage matches to
maintain their 100 per cent start to the European campaign.
A brace each from
Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel di Maria determined the result and left their Coach
more than satisfied.
“I think tonight we
had more balance. The team was more compact and we tried to play deeper,”
surmised Ancelotti afterwards.
“The players followed
the game plan we had prepared this week very well and the change in our
attitude was very good.
“We modified the
system to use the flanks more and to create more open spaces. We had little
space in midfield and that's why we made this change, because Copenhagen are a
very strong team. Our players have the quality to use all possible systems.
“The important thing
is to do our best, try to finish top of the group, not only to be able to play
the second leg of the Round of 16 at home, but for also for confidence, we have
to do our best in all of our matches and we have a great opportunity to do so
in the next one.”
It has been a
difficult few days for the Coach after defeat in the Spanish capital’s derby at
home to Atletico Madrid, whilst sections of the home support again whistled the
team at the half-time break.
“Being whistled at is
not bad. I have had it happen a lot in my career and I do not remember it being
bad.
“It helps your
motivation and concentration and, from time to time, it is necessary.
“At the end of the
first half, they were not very happy because we were playing slowly and the
pace has to be faster and the play has to be simpler because we have the
ability to play that way.”
Iker Casillas
completed a first 90 minutes under Ancelotti.
“He played a great
match. At the end he made some great stops and is an institution for everyone
here.
“It is very important
that he is in the squad, he is very professional, very focused and really helps
his teammates.”
Gareth Bale missed the
game through a muscle contracture and looks set to also miss the trip to Getafe
at the weekend.
“We are not worried,
he has not played because of muscle fatigue and it is nothing special. He is
waiting to recover his optimal fitness.
“He was not at 100 per
cent but he will get there because he has 15 days of rest and then will be
ready.
“He is not happy and
that is normal, he wants to play and is eager but it is not a problem. Now we
have time to get him into a good physical condition and avoid injuries.”
